Hi everybody!

So, that’s it, we did it…and it was huge, bright, exciting, different, new, busy, crowded, fun, exhausting, magnificent, difficult, great, geweldig, tietenaffengeil and so many other  things that there are not enough words to describe it, so from now own let me just say, as a sway to sum it up, AWESOME.

pictures by Bart Dykstra www.bartdykstra.com

It took 6 months of intense work, problems, coffees, meetings, late days at work, solutions, e-mails, tweaks, construction, design, presentations to get to this point, and it was all on the line, but with the last weeks of great focus and the last few days in Dortmund with everybody showing great commitment we crossed the goal line…and boy, how we did it!

pictures by Bart Dykstra www.bartdykstra.com

We got a little rain at the end, but that didn’t make the crowd (we got the terrace pretty crowded, people was dancing, seeing, listening to the music, having a drink, or all together) enjoy it any less. We’re very happy with how the system worked and how the projection looked, and we’re not the only ones, as you could only hear good words for our project walking around…some even overheard how it should be brought to Amsterdam…let’s hope that happens, you know we’re willing to redesign and adapt our experience to make it happen in Amsterdam!

pictures by Bart Dykstra www.bartdykstra.com

It’s important for us to remark that, after this great success, we believe it’d make no sense to let the project die, and we’re willing to adapt it and give it a whole new life in new events and locations. We are waiting for your ideas and suggestions, and looking forward to see what you want to do with it!

To show you the full potential of the project, we’ll soon release a mindblowing registration shot and edited by Hugo van der Meer, from Keyframe productions, a series of photographies from Bart Dykstra and a documentary that Marteen van der Burg shot for iTunes University about the project and the learning process of the student team.

The music, by Berlin based artist Kid Simius (watch this kid, in a few years it won’t be weird to anybody to see his name with Daft Punk or Kraftwerk!) also harvested lots of comments of surprise and admiration, wondering how can he not be a star yet, and when will he perform at some of the top locations in Amsterdam…we also hope to see that happening soon!

The dancers from Mine-Sports put on a great performance, Jan introduced the event with a charming multilingual speech, Beam Systems made all the technique perfect and with they’re “invisible” work they spared us the need to worry about the technics.

We’re grateful, so we also have to thank everybody in the E-culture Fair/Dortmunder U organization that made things easy for us, the initiators of the project and sponsors: Virtueel Platform and Institute of Network Cultures, and to everybody else that helped during the development of the project (Kars Alfrink from Hubbub, people from TrouwAmsterdam, Hugo van der Meer, Bart Dykstra, Marteen van der Burg…)

I can’t finish this post without thanking personally  the rest of the team, (leaded by Jan, who solved a million problems for us) for their effort, their work, their commitment, their jokes, the lunchs and dinners, the beers and, in one word, the time together. It was great, it was fun, and WE ROCKED!

Hi there!

it’s been an awful long time that we didn’t update the blog…but we’ve sure been busy!

The team is spread all over the globe, with Moritz in Germany, Gijs in Perú, Jan and Carlos in Spain and the rest somewhere in the Netherlands bringing the holy word of the U to the world.

This pasts weeks, besides winning the world cup (three nationalities in the team, three countries in the semi-finals, that’s as good as it gets!), we’ve been working close with people from Virtueel Platform to make the event awesome, as it’ll also be the whole E-Culture Fair they’re organizing.

On the technical end, the code keeps getting better and better, and moving gets easier, funnier, faster, more intuitive and…just awesomely “betterer” thanks to the good work of Joost and Matthias and some external collaboration; Plus, we’ve also improved some hardware, so the experience keeps growing better and better….

Last time we showed it was almost a month ago in TrouwAmsterdam, during the end presentation of the MediaLAB, and not only we had a lot of fun seeing people enjoy it and had great feedback, but also people showed real interest in the project and how we should find a way to keep using the installation for future events in other buildings in the Netherlands, something we’re definitely open to (so if you’re interested, contact us now!). Also, we had a chance to show everybody who has been helping us, like the guys from Beam Systems, Michel Langendijk from Virtueel Platform and Kars Alfrink from Hubbub how we were doing!

For now you can enjoy a video of the presentation and see the recent looks of the project…

http://www.vimeo.com/13231345

and get ready, because August 25th keeps getting closer and closer and the cultural heat of Europe heads to Dortmund!

The Virtueel Platform is arranging a bus on the 23rd and 24th (leaving at 8 am. from their office in the Damrak. costs is 27.5€ the roundtrip including entrance to ECF. you can email them to book!)

We’ve been getting a lot of attention in the media lately, which we really appreciate.
Here’s another example: the student magazine Havana published a short comment and a video on us winning the Golden Dot Award last week.

Click on the image to see it!

If you work for/own some media platform and want more information on the project or a full press dossier or an interview don’t hesitate to contact and ask! (We’re nice people, decent conversation and can offer good coffee)

Dear creative minds, artistic hands, business brains, curious eyes and friend’s hearts,
It has finally come the day when the U-turm project will be introduced in public!
On Thursday June 17th the U-turm will be unveiled in Trouwamsterdam (Wibautstraat 127) starting at 19:30 in the endpresentation of the MediaLAB.
The U-turm project is a HvA MediaLAB based project developed in collaboration with artist Matthias Oostrik and in partnership with Beam Systems and Virtueel Platform for the closing of the E-Culture fair in August in Dortmund as part of the Ruhr 2010 cultural capital of Europe events.
The event consists of a full experience featuring an interactive urban projection, music, dance and video art. Four stages will be built in front of the building and whenever somebody steps in one of them, his/her silhouette will be projected on a window. Depending on how the player moves in his stage, his image will travel along the building, creating interesting effects when meeting other players and leaving a time trace.
Don’t miss this chance to come learn more about this award winning project, get inspiration from our team, network or simply…jump from a window!
Greetings,
The U-turm Team.

Yesterday, NEMO Amsterdam, the moment of truth: Golden Dot award-day. We started building up our awesome stand early in the morning so that we could show everyone where we’re working on later that day. Thanks to Beamsystems we got all the equipment for the presentation and they also were so nice to transport everything (including our stage) to the venue.

The evening was a big success we showed the installation to a lot of people and they all responded really enthusiastic. Of course we also had to impress the jury and we did! For the interactive category we received a lot of credits. Bob Overbeeke, interactive campaigner of Oxfam Novib, was the member of the jury and he called us very professional and for him it seemed that the project was already finished or at least almost. Unfortunately we didn’t get the award but we had some great competition. The nomination was already a big honor for us.

Second category was the technical one. Here Peet Sneekes, software architect from Mirabeau, was the man to impress. Joost our technician told him a lot about the technical aspects and explained how he made things work. Piet was full of enthusiasm and seemed really impressed with the technique and the whole concept. During the award show the tension got up to a maximum level when the technical category came up. When U-turm was announced as a winner we all jumped out of our chairs! WE WON WE WON!!

The evening was a great success and we would like to thank everyone for their great support. We love U!

So, tomorrow is the big day and we’ll spend the afternoon and evening in the beautiful Nemo Museum trying to bring home the two golden dot awards we’re nominees for!

It’ll be a long and exciting day, as we’ll build there our prototype setup again, and we’ll see if jury and guests enjoy it as much as everybody who has already tested the experience, we really hope so! We must say we couldn’t have made it without the great help and support of our partner and sponsor, Beam Systems, who will help us with equipment and productional issues, they’re a really important part of the project and a great strength helping us make the project awesome and successful.

Wish us luck, and if you have the chance, be welcome to stop by at our corner!

:)
